Et si votre passion vous permettait de changer le monde ? C’est exactement ce qu’ont fait des milliers d’adolescents depuis la première édition du concours Google Science Fair, en 2011. C’est la quatrième fois que nous accueillons ce concours, de façon à encourager la prochaine génération de scientifiques et d’ingénieurs. De la Russie à l’Australie, de l’Inde au Canada, les finalistes de cette année (âgés de 13 à 18 ans) sont déjà bien engagés sur la voie de l’excellence.

Cette année, nous avons le plaisir de vous annoncer que Guillaume Rolland, originaire de Nantes, fait partie des 15 finalistes internationaux avec son projet de réveil olfactif. Il permet aux personnes souffrant de déficiences sensorielles de se réveiller autrement. 

Voici quelques exemples d’autres projets qui ont attiré notre attention : Kenneth Shinozuka, de New York, souhaite venir en aide aux personnes atteintes de la maladie d’Alzheimer et a mis au point un 

petit capteur portable pour comprendre l’une des causes de l’errance causée par la maladie d’Alzheimer. Samuel Burrow, du Royaume-Uni, souhaite améliorer l’environnement en réduisant la pollution et a créé un revêtement spécial qui réduit les déchets chimiques de l’atmosphère une fois soumis à la lumière ambiante. 

Quelle est l’étape suivante pour nos jeunes scientifiques ? 

Le mois prochain, ils se retrouveront en Californie au siège de Google pour concourir par catégorie d'âge et pour le Grand Prix du Google Science Fair. Le concours finira en beauté avec une cérémonie de récompenses qui sera retransmise en direct sur la chaîne YouTube dédiée et sur notre site Web.

Review :

Promising debut from a talented Emirati director

I've convinced my movie-addict French neighbor to come discovering the first Emirati movie with me last night and we've both been thrilled by this experience! We've both been living in Dubai for a few years and everything in this movie was talking to us: the character, the story, the atmosphere and the sets of course. Debuting director Ali F. Mostafa has done an excellent work in depicting these different lives and their destiny in this cosmopolitan city, capturing smartly the essence of the Dubai "cultural melting pot" without falling in the stereotype. Acting was good in general for the whole cast (special mention to Yassin Alsalman aka Khalfan and Sonu Sood aka Basu), the photography was capturing Dubai atmosphere with just the right tone and the cool soundtrack was giving a arty note to the movie, reminding me a bit of what is being done in the US independent production the last years (Anderson or Reitman). City of Life is not free of defects though: the fighting scenes look a bit like cartoon (watch the local martial art in dish dash!), the social class rivalry between Emiratis would have benefited from further development and some elapse effect in the narration dilute the emotional impact of certain scenes (the scene with Natalia at the hospital), but these minor reproaches do not erode the pleasure you will feel watching City of Life and remember this is only the first movie of Ali F. Mostafa! Now would this movie talk to somebody not living in Dubai? I would say definitely yes as City of Life stands alone as a good piece of cinematography with a captivating story. I hope this movie will get the chance to have an international career and I wish foreign audience will witness the birth of a new talented Emirati director as we did yesterday. Spread the word!!!

Immigrants Luigi and Lafayette work for Andreas Flaxman at his wax museum in Lower Manhattan. Luigi, an asthmatic middle-aged romantic, works as an artist/sculptor while the Lafayette functions as a jack-of-all trades for Flaxman, who is obsessed with Ancient Rome, a preoccupation that most of his exhibits reflect. Lafayette lives in a rat-infested basement some blocks away and carries a whistle with to scare the rodents, which seem to be endemic to the area. He also works as a stagehand for a feminist theater group in their Off-off Broadway theater where he suffers their sexist abuses including being forced to wear a leotard. Angelica, one of the beautiful actresses in the troupe is attracted to him, and they begin a relationship. At the same time Luigi comes across the 50 foot model of King Kong in a Hudson River landfill, apparently discarded after the 1976 movie version of "King Kong." There he finds an orphaned baby chimpanzee which he takes to be the giant simian's son. Allergic...

Review :

Curious Imagery keeps this film entertaining.

Is it another world, or our world gone mad? Ferreri has quite an imagination, especially his use of juxtaposition: a rotting carcass of King Kong, a wax museum where James Coco reenacts parts of history, and an underground society where rats prevail. Depardieu, who's lines are badly dubbed, manages to get through this yarn uncomfortably gripping a chimp where he found beside the dead Kong. Mastroianni is always at his best, altho this time presenting a more cartoonish characterization. However, despite the exotic idiosyncrasies, this film can be rather dull at moments. Nevertheless, I enjoyed a large percentage of this movie, ad hominem the ambiguous finale which may help clarifies the film's bizarre symbolism. Watch this one on a rainy day.

Review :

Refreashingly good

At first I thought the movie seemed silly, but it quickly proved otherwise. It is a very haunting love story. Very well done. Alexia Fast has a great handle on the accent. The progression is slow. It isn't chock full of action, but it doesn't need to be. It's a walk through the supernatural, not running from explosions and jumping through glass. It's nothing like the Blair witch clones or the paranormal activity clones. It's no slasher.

I won't go into any details, but I was pleased to see a film that was more haunting, less gore and fright. This film is actually believable, akin to many family or campfire tales of the past. It's a wonderful expression of how history can haunt a land. I'm from Kentucky, and stories like this are spot-on. It is really difficult to discuss without completely spoiling the plot. Excellent watch. I will no doubt recommend to friends and family, and certainly watch again.

Best parts are filmed in Pakistan

I have a limited understanding of this film so am writing this review only because there were no other reviews yet. My understanding is limited because I do not speak German and apparently there has been no release of this film with English subtitles, or at least I could not find one (I did find some English subtitles on the internet but they were both badly out of synch and a mashed Google translation from Russian!). Hence, some of the dialog was rather lost on me and very likely some of the drama as well.

I primarily viewed this film not for the story but in the hopes of spectacular mountain scenery and spectacular mountain climbing sequences. There was some of this, but not nearly enough for my tastes, or I would have given the film a higher rating. A better film (also German but available with English subtitles) is North Face (Nordwand, IMDb #tt0844457) which is both very dramatic and has very spectacular mountain climbing sequences (although I still wanted more there as well).

To my mind, the best parts of the film took place in Pakistan and in the Pakistani Himalayan foothills. Very nice and interesting photography, and I gleaned from the credits that it was actually filmed there. I love seeing exotic locales like that, which I am unlikely to see otherwise, and I found the film worth my time just for that. I would watch it again if I could find a version with good English subtitles.

The competent adaptation

Competent adaptation of a typical Graham Greene story, a tale of dilemma, forgiveness and redemption in a quasi-fascist South America. Direction and acting are both ordinary, though Michael Caine and Richard Gere are at least well cast; Bob Hoskins (an Argentinian policeman!) less so. Always interesting, but strangely subdued: Greene packs a greater moral punch on the page.

Why this movie is so underrated?

It's one of my favorite movies, alongside with City of God, Emperor and Assassin, etc. And I don't know exactly why.

Well, it's not a masterpiece. But there's something what intrigued me very much.

First of all, this movie is (about) a journey. It's amazing journey of a cynical modern man. Journey to the childhood, the family, humanity, truth.

Second thing, which I very like in this movie, is atmosphere. There's something of "magic realism" of Africa/Latin America definitely.

When i visit IMDb, I was really surprised, how underrated is this movie. Maybe it's because the actors?
